How Television Watching
affects grades and health
![]() Criteria for health points in this include the passing or failing of the Physical Fitness Test, the Attendance rate in school and the (if any) illnesses present in the body. From the graph, it is obvious that the one with the lowest grade is the one who has spent the Most hours watching television. People with lower than average or average grades are usually Those who spend more than 12 hours a week on television ALONE. Well, on the health part, many people who spend many hours on television can still get above average results for their health, in fact most of the people here have passed their Physical Fitness Test (surprised?) so we can conclude that excessive television watching has not much adverse effects on one's health (save for our eyes ). The reason why T.V has not much negative effect on one's body might be mainly because the effects have not surfaced yet. As the data collected is from teenagers, the affects on their health are not seen yet because of their young and strong bodies, and this we admit might be a flaw in the project. On the other hand, besides academic results, the more obvious and undesirable effects of excessive television watching will include the deterioration of sight, from the table below, using data from the same selected 20, we can see that almost all of them wear spectacles.
% of people wearing spectacles = 80% % of people not wearing spectacles = 20% Now, we continue on to see how Television affects our weight and what effects that does have on our body. Out of the above 20 people, we did random picks (which included people who did the survey later.) And here is what we have got. As one can see, the one who spends the most no. of hours at the television has the greatest weight among all 5, and how does this affect us? With a greater body weight, especially one that does not match one's height, one might have a certain difficulty in keeping fit, thereby affecting our studies, so as we can all see it is a sort of chain effect. And how does excessive television watching affect us? When watching television one usually just sit down comfortably and watch the programs, who would exercise and watch television at the same time? Since a large amount of many people's time are taken up by TV they will not have a chance to exercise during that time, and then, later they will be much too involved in their homework and exams and will, (once again) have no chance to work out. As a result, the body will deteriorate and studies will be affected in a great deal. To emphasize on our points, we will show you how many hours in a day the average person spends watching television. Average Hours a person spends on TV each day = 2 hour As one can see, with an average of 2 hours of TV watching a day one can have another 2 hours of rest after 6 hours of school, 8 hours of sleep, 3 hours for studies, and another 3 for school activities. This 2 hours can then be further utilized for exercise, thereby keeping the body fit. And therefore, in conclusion, at most 14 hours of television per week is acceptable for the body. |
